More Galician hospitals for a normal delivery

A few weeks ago we echoed that Asturias is committed to natural childbirth in its hospitals, and fortunately more and more cases are trying to reduce medicalization and see childbirth as a natural physiological process.

And, although there is a long way to go, we can say that Galicia It adds to this necessary trend: the public hospitals of O Salnés, Cee, Burela and Ourense will be the first to apply a new strategy for normal delivery care.

Midwives and gynecologists have been trained in order to give more prominence to the woman who will give birth and a greater humanization. This also means reducing medicalization as much as possible, without sacrificing safety and interventions to maintain maternal and fetal well-being if necessary.

Some news regarding the current model are the greater autonomy of midwives and the offer of alternative methods for pain relief, other than epidural analgesia, such as hot water baths. Good news for mothers who want this option, and hopefully every time the hospital sector (and social in general) is more open to it.

Specific training for professionals and an investment in facilities are needed to create, for example, bathtubs for childbirth, and perhaps for this reason this option for a more natural birth has not yet been generalized.

However, it weighs, above all, the assumption of certain concepts in the community, or neglect on issues such as "do what you want with me", when we have much to say in our birth, and that is harder to overcome. But it's a start.
