The proximity of a nuclear power plant increases cancer risk in children

A German study conducted by the University of Mainz at the request of the Federal Office of Radiation Protection of that country, shows us a fact that we already suspected, living near a nuclear power plant increases the risks of any type of cancer in children. The study has checked the distance at which a central family home can be found where children reside.

The researchers took data from all children under five who developed some type of cancer between 1980 and 2003, a total of 13,373 children. Then they classified by proximity to each of the 16 existing plants in the country. Apparently, there was a clear relationship between the proximity of the plant and the development of an oncological disease, with the radius of five kilometers near the plant being the most dangerous for this purpose, although the increase was already outlined within a radius of 50 kilometers of the risk of suffering from some type of cancer.

The study consists of a volume of 150 pages that has been submitted to the German Minister of Environment, he has promised to examine it. It would be interesting that this study could be disseminated to inform other countries where there are nuclear power plants and therefore a higher risk for children living nearby.
