4th grade students participate in the Junior First Lego League 2013

My daughter had the opportunity to participate in the edition of the Junior First Lego League that was held in the Camilo José Cela University at the end of February 2013 and in which together with the rest of the team they presented their Subibus project and that can be partially seen in the image.

As we have commented here, the First Lego League is one of the most relevant scientific events worldwide. Is a scientific-technological program aimed at children and young people from all over the world in order to solve a challenge related to environmental or scientific problems by teams that help improve the life of the human being and his environment. Participants work in teams during the months prior to the competition investigating and providing a solution. To do this, led by a coach, they carry out research tasks on the challenge posed. The culmination of the process translates into the creation of a robot or machinery that carries out the entrusted mission.

This year 2013 the First Lego League has brought to Spain the Junior version of this event. The Junior First Lego League took place on February 23 in Madrid. In this Junior version of the event, the participants did not compete with each other although there was an expert jury. As we mentioned in Peques and Más, José María López Sancho, Director of the CSIC Program at the School, María José Gómez Díaz, Program Coordinator and Martín Martínez Ripoll, President of the Scientific Committee-Advisor of the program were reviewing each of the projects in the one that the kids worked.

Each team showed, in a well-qualified space to do so, their research project and a panel summarizing the project. In the case of the small team, it was about solving a need for the elderly. His project was called Subibus and it consisted of enabling a platform that when a person detected it was raised to facilitate access to the means of transport for the elderly. And all this using the LEGO sensors and programming.

The children were very attentive to the questions of the scientists and explained the details of the project. It is a great experience to be able to explain to the elderly the details of the work and surely the children will not forget it in a long time. The two monitors of the project, Mercedes and Yolanda, helped the kids a lot with the direction, orientation and supervision of the work.

And when the event ended, and already joined the rest of the First Lego League teams, they received a participation diploma and a medal.
