The safety of school transport in the school environment

As I said yesterday, in aspects related to the safety of children in the school environment, I would like to dedicate a special section to school transport. It turns out that In addition to all the requirements that must be met in order to take children safely, it is necessary to take into account a series of considerations when parking and dropping / picking up students.

School transportation must comply with safety requirements, which are not yet mandatory, offer the benefits of control and clearly separate spaces for vehicles from pedestrians.

Safety on buses that run school routes goes through:

  • School buses must have SRI suitable for minors who use it. This is talking about talking because we saw in its day that SRIs for cars do not serve by bus, and those that offer security in these vehicles are not approved because the law has not developed sufficiently.

  • Have a own and exclusive parking, with clear visibility and where they do not match pedestrians. In the cases that I know, the visibility is good but the non-coincidence with pedestrians is breached.

  • The maneuvers cannot be exercised until the minors are located inside the center or the bus.

  • Use control and location systems for minors that ensure their location, avoiding the march if a boy or girl is missing to climb or stay inside when the service has ended.

  • Know them material means and procedures for safety action in the event of an accident. Performing exercises where all agents are involved and know what their role is.

For the National Association of Child Safety (and also for me) accident prevention is a shared responsibility, and the protection of the most vulnerable also

I commented in the post that precedes this that yesterday there was an unfortunate accident in which four children (in addition to the driver and the monitor) were injured. He had only made a stop to pick up all the children on the route, so the vehicle was half empty, this (however) does not detract from the fact. I heard comments on television related to the absence of seat belts in the seats, which could have caused much worse personal injury.

Even at the risk of being heavy, I have to remember that school transportation, in addition to meeting requirements during the time of leaving / picking up children, must ensure the safety of the trips. In this article I always remember, it is said that two or three point belts would not protect sufficiently in case of an accident.

We know that in other countries buses that take children to school have only that purpose, and therefore it is fully adapted to ensure the safety of children. Here, as if it were a nonsense, we are satisfied that the bus that takes our children wear safety belts (in the event that it is bound by law, or that they have been installed after the date on which dictated the regulations).
