"Caja de cuentos", a solidarity project in Haiti

We want to start the year also talking about solidarity, and we have looked at UNICEF Boîte à Histoires project, "Story Box", which aims to bring books to children of the most vulnerable neighborhoods in Haiti.

This is a program carried out by the non-governmental organization in collaboration with Libraries Without Borders, through which mobile libraries with about one hundred books in French and Creole language each are created.

In 2012 they distributed 300 traveling libraries formed by books carefully chosen by specialists in child development and librarians, in order to adapt to the context of Haiti and stimulate the creative capacity and imagination of children.

It is about keeping the most disadvantaged children in touch with culture, with the rest of society, with their country and the world.

And is that "Boîte à Histoires" is a psychosocial program aimed at foster the emotional, cognitive and social development of Haitian children and to complement, but not replace, the official education offered by schools.

It is usual to listen to children who benefit from this program that they are glad to be able to exchange weapons for books and that they can become someone thanks to these readings. Such is the power of education and books, in which we truly believe.

Thanks to "Caja de cuentos", a solidarity project in Haiti, children go to street libraries on weekends and during holidays or school vacations. So they have access to books, something that seems very close to most, but that is difficult for many children.
