Cooking with children: chocolate, banana and oatmeal cookies

The chocolate cookie recipe It is already a classic among pastry recipes. It was invented in 1930 (it is not known if it was by chance or intentionally) when Ruth Wakefield added a few pieces of chocolate to her usual cookie dough and turned out to be a success among the customers of her Boston hotel "Toll House".

And now, let's go with what we all like: cooking with children. Making cookies is one of the easiest recipes for cooking with children, since it practically does not involve any dangerous procedure (except when baking, which should always be supervised by an adult).

One thing that you should keep in mind when cooking with children is to have all the ingredients prepared, already heavy. Especially if they are smaller. My two-year-old son gets impatient between step by step and once in a while, if I lose my mind to go find some ingredient, I have found the mixture with the whole cinnamon canister ...

Ingredients (for 50 cookies)

  • 180 g of softened butter (take it out at least 2 hours before the refrigerator)
  • 175 g (1 cup) brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 225 g (1 1/2 cups) white flour (sifted)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (sifted)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (sifted)
  • 1 cup of crushed banana with a fork (2 medium bananas)
  • 190 g (1 cup) chocolate chips
  • 180 g (2 cups) of oatmeal

Preparation

  1. We preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF).
  2. We put the butter and sugar in a large bowl and mix it (we can use some rods or an automatic mixer), if you use rods, depending on the age of your child, you can let them hold them. Mix for about 5 minutes.
  3. Now we continue mixing with a wooden spoon and add the egg, whisking until well mixed.
  4. We add the flour together with baking soda (already screened), the cinnamon and the banana and we continue mixing.
  5. We add the chocolate chips and oatmeal, we mix well. You will have a thick paste.
  6. We put vegetable paper in a baking tray. We make balls with the dough (using the measure of a full scoop). We put the balls of dough on the baking sheet and crush them a little to flatten them. You must be careful with leave enough space between cookies because in the oven they widen and they could touch each other.
  7. We bake for about 12-14 minutes until lightly browned.

To keep them better, it is recommended to leave them in the fridge for at least 2 days. You can prepare the dough and bake it the next day (keeping it in the fridge). You can also freeze the dough.
