Influenza A: children and pregnant women will be the last to get vaccinated

Pregnant women and children with chronic diseases will be the last to be vaccinated for influenza A, as at the moment it has not been proven that the vaccine is safe for them.

A month ago I commented that the vaccine was considered safe because it is an inactive virus, however at the present time the message that arrives from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is a bit more reserved and prefer to establish Doubt about possible side effects.

The Government has stated in this regard that will not vaccinate any pregnant women until the efficacy and safety of the vaccine is proven: “We have to keep pregnant women among the risk groups because the evolution of the disease has shown that they are a vulnerable group and that it presents certain degrees of severity. But the start of your vaccination is something else. It will only be undertaken if there are guarantees. And that has not yet occurred. ”

This precaution is caused by the lack of data that exists, in general, of both the disease and the vaccine.

It is a virus, H1N1, which we have known only for a few months, and its vaccine is still poorly studied. Trials to determine the safety of a vaccine in a pregnant woman are performed with non-pregnant women (who later become pregnant), so the conclusions in this regard are slow.

The Ministry of Health will wait for scientific evidence to provide data and safety guarantees to pregnant women. Until then there will be no vaccination for them.

In the case of children, the same thing happens. The effects of the vaccine have only been tested in healthy adults and it is still early to draw conclusions even with this population group.

Until the effects of these trials are known, it will not begin to assess how it can work with children and pregnant women.
