An early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis is necessary

Various English health agencies provide advice to the international healthcare community, in a study prepared by English and Scottish scientists on cystic fibrosis, they have ruled that an early diagnosis of this disease would serve to reduce the cost of treatments that would be performed later.

The study is based on two groups, the first one includes 184 medical records corresponding to the year 2002 of children between 1 and 9 years of age who suffered from the disease and who had an early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis as soon as they were born. The second group corresponds to 950 records belonging to children who were diagnosed with the disease after their birth. The difference between the two groups is quite overwhelming, only in the economic aspect. The savings can be up to 400% in treatment if an early diagnosis of the disease is made, because a late diagnosis implies a greater number of children who have to go through the operating room because of the disease.

It may seem banal to speak only of the economic aspect, but not only in that it is gained, it is also possible to improve the quality of life of the child, since so many hospital admissions are not necessary to apply an intensive treatment due to this chronic disease.

The medical community always indicates that an early diagnosis of any disease is an asset gained in every way. The study has been published in the scientific journal The Lancet.
