Weaning is a vital moment in the baby's life

Feeding in the first year of life is a critical process because the type of feeding, breastfeeding and its duration, and the introduction of solid nutrients, are clearly related to the appearance of certain diseases such as food allergies, asthma, celiac disease or diabetes

The weaning stage of the infant is a period in which the major changes in feeding are made during the first year, since it goes from the suspension of breastfeeding to the introduction of semi-solid foods, which is considered by some experts as a factor that influences the appearance of allergies.

This is what Dr. J.C. Vitoria Cormenzana, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of the Basque Country in the Journal of Primary Care Pediatrics. A significant fact is the appearance of allergies in the last decade. It is estimated that 8% of children have a food allergy, and 1% are celiac. The type of breastfeeding, duration and the moment at which the solid feeding is introduced, can influence these diseases.

Breastfeeding maintained for 4 months or more, is associated with a reduction in the incidence of asthma, or the relationship of cow's milk proteins with the development of diabetes Mellitus type I. Therefore, many experts recommend extending the period of breastfeeding for its multiple benefits.
