May 5, International Midwives Day

Today, although the protagonists are moms, we did not want to pass up International Midwives Day, an annual event that takes place on May 5. During this day it is intended to raise awareness in society about the work of the midwife throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

The midwife in specialized and hospital care is an essential piece to carry out a comprehensive, humanized and individualized care of high quality, since it is the professional trained specifically to attend the sexual and reproductive health of women, as well as the care for Newborn healthy until the 28th day of life.

On the occasion of this day I wanted to recommend an interesting document prepared by the Navarra Association of Midwives entitled "Guide of objectives, functions and activities of the midwife: hospital assistance" (by Diana Arteaga, Nuria Ayestarán, Ma Mar Horcada, Belén Ocina, Immaculate Serrano).

It takes a tour of all the functions of these professionals who realize their importance in preparing for childbirth, birth and the puerperium. We highlight the following:

  • Assistance function: providing the appropriate care in normal situations, detecting possible alterations and collaborating as an active member of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Educational function: offering a health education to women, family and community in relation to sexual and reproductive health. It will also collaborate in teaching activities aimed at training nurses, midwives and other health professionals.

  • Management and administrative: carried out in the field of their specialty to achieve an adequate organization of the care and use of existing resources.

  • Researcher: developing and collaborating in research projects aimed at improving professional activity to promote individual, family and community health.

As we see, it is a complex task, with many aspects, and International Midwives Day celebrated today He wants to claim this work that has accompanied mothers and children over time. Sure today, many mothers thank midwives.
