1. Buy a good quality fishing equipment Fishing rods for children are usually cheap but they are very difficult to use. It is best to buy a little more expensive fishing rod that weighs little and has a good rail. There are different sizes, buy it small (minimum meter and a half). Ask the fishing store to give you floating torpedo-style tiles.2. Decide where to go fishing with children (choose the location well) It is one of the most important factors for fishing with children. Ideally, go to places where you know there are fish and you will have more opportunities to fish. You should also take into account if there is an area for families or even if you can camp nearby you can cook what you have caught.
3. Go prepared It seems silly to say it but it is something that, when we go with children, we must always take into account. Depending on where we go we must bring water reserves, food, insect repellents, sun cream, cleaning wipes, spare clothes in case we get wet ... and, of course, the complete fishing equipment.
4. Choose the hook well Depending on where we go fishing, we will need a bait or another. Ask at your usual fishing shop. You can also take into account the interests of your son, if you have already fished with him before, you will know if he prefers a box of live worms or if it is mine and will prefer to take stuffed olives (which give something when hooked to the hook ).
5. Set standards Before fishing with children, it is okay to establish a series of rules so that there are no misunderstandings. If we fish in the sea, it is very important to be cautious, with the sea you do not play and this we must let the children know, without fear, of course but imposing some respect. We must also warn them of how dangerous the hook can be depending on how we use it.
6. Wear corks An important element for fishing are the corks that indicate when a fish has bitten the hook, children will be very motivated to see how it sinks and to know that they have managed to fish a piece.
7. Give homework to children Making children feel useful will help them take responsibility. If we go with small children and older children, we can designate different tasks, the smallest we can make them hold the rod while we prepare the hook, the older ones can be responsible for removing the fish once they have been caught.
8. Responsible fishing We must mentalize our children that we are only going to keep the fish we are going to eat, if we have fished too much, we can / should return them to the sea (if we are not going to eat them, we must always return them to the sea). We must all be responsible for cleaning the place where we have been and leave it as we found it (or better, if possible).
9. Duration Let's try not to be too long, children are very impatient and can be frustrated if we take too long. You will see how little by little they will improve as far as patience is concerned.
10. Make time enjoyable Sometimes the wait can be long and boring, have a repertoire of things to do or riddles to hang out with the children. You can even sing songs, prepare a picnic by the river ...
11. Explain to them what it consists in advance For children who have never gone fishing, it would be good to explain what it is. There are many books and children's stories about fishing, we can put them in the background during the days before departure, explain them well what is going fishing, etc.
