Gum problems during pregnancy and premature delivery

We have already commented on several occasions that oral health during pregnancy is essential. So much that even gum problems could trigger premature delivery. However, although some studies state that the treatment of periodontal diseases would prevent premature delivery, today we are talking about an investigation that points out the opposite.

Needless to say, treatments and oral care during pregnancy, especially in the case of problems, not only remain beneficial, but also necessary to avoid other complications, but according to this study they would not prevent premature delivery.

The team of researchers, led by Steven Offenbacher, of the Oral Health Institute of North Carolina (USA), conducted a study on 1,806 pregnant women with periodontal disease. All obstetric controls were done, but some of them received four gum care sessions before the 24th week of gestation and others did not.

The team noted that Preterm birth rates were similar in both groups.: 13% among women who had made the four consultations and 12% in the other group.

But treating gum disease during pregnancy is a safe procedure and, as we say, necessary, more taking into account that periodontal problems are aggravated in 25% of pregnancies.

The study, entitled "Effects of Periodontal Therapy on Rate of Preterm Delivery: A Randomized Controlled Trial", is published and can be found in the journal "Obstetrics & Gynecology. "

Bacterial infection attacks the tissues that support the teeth below the gum line. And, if it's not treated, though do not influence the premature birth rate, can cause tooth loss and other problems that should be avoided.
